Most chords are built from three or more notes, but power chords are built from just two notes: the root and fifth of a scale. Major and minor chords include the third degree of a scale—the note that gives them their distinctively major or minor sound—but power chords do not. Because of this, power chords can sound ambiguous—depending on the context, they can sound either major or minor.
