Jody Stecher got this song from John Herald, the guitar player and lead singer in the Greenbriar Boys, which was a New York City bluegrass band that he joined as a mandolin player when he was 17, just out of high school.
They sing this song in Cajun Louisiana; it’s “Chanson de Cinquante Sous.” Same story, same melody, although there are different melodies.
