Weekly Workouts: Perfect Your Pick Technique

The Weekly Workout is a series of monthly exercises made up of interesting technical workouts that will get your fretting- and picking-hand fingers working in different ways, and offer musical studies that will help you visualize and explore the fingerboard. In every lesson, you’ll get a different exercise to work on for each week of the month, as well as a few extra variations and extended practice ideas. Although we’re presenting these as weekly exercises, there are numerous ways you can approach them, of course. Do whatever feels right for you.

This Weekly Workout is titled, Perfect Your Pick Technique, which includes exercises to help you control your pick. From Scott Nygaard’s introduction:

A quick survey of accomplished pickers will reveal big differences in technique. For example, pull up YouTube clips of Pat Metheny, Tony Rice, and Eric Clapton and you’ll see three guitar virtuosos with wildly differing pick techniques, and not just because of their musical styles. Compare Rice with Doc Watson and Dan Crary, for example, and you’ll see three bluegrass masters with very different pick approaches. In these workouts, we won’t get into how to hold the pick—that’s generally a personal topic best tackled with a good teacher—but I’ll give you some exercises you can use to work on controlling your pick.
