S. L. Mossman Flint Hills Special Dreadnought

Stuart Mossman is one of the handful of 1960s luthiers, like Richard Hoover of Santa Cruz, Bill Collings, and Bob Taylor, to transition from custom to small factory production, but a series of unfortunate events and business developments cut short a once high-flying brand, played by artists as diverse as John Denver, Doc Watson, Albert Lee, and Eric Clapton.  

This is number 857 of about 7,500 S. L. Mossman guitars, built in 1974, one year before a factory fire destroyed Mossman's stock of Brazilian rosewood. The Flint Hills Special was the second of four models, all dreadnoughts, offered in the original Mossman line-up. It retailed for about $450 when purchased new. It has the powerful distinctive Mossman sound and response and represents a unique chapter in American lutherie.

Condition Note: The top patch which appears in a lighter color than the original top was made in 1991 at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Los Angeles after a stage accident. It has no impact on the tone, structural integrity, or playability of the guitar.
