One of the most beloved songs in the gospel literature, “Rock of Ages” works surprisingly well as a guitar instrumental, arranged here by Steve Baughman. Though Baughman often uses alternate tunings, he plays “Rock of Ages” in standard tuning, in the key of A major. For a dynamic arrangement of this sweet and simple song, in the first 12 bars, Baughman fleshes out the single-note melody with some diatonic thirds, sixths, and chord fragments, then takes the piece through some other interesting passages that should delight guitarists.
