ABOUT THE MUSIC (Excerpted from the Introduction)
The American folk tradition known as old-time music is a mixture of styles that were popular in rural southern communities in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Fiddle tunes and ancient ballads from the British Isles, African-American blues and minstrel music, and sentimental pop songs gleaned from sheet music all contributed to this music, which began to leak out of the mountain hollers and be recorded and codified in the 1920s.

The directness and poignancy of this seemingly simple music has appealed to people from all parts of the globe and all walks of life, from city-bred song collectors roaming the mountains with newfangled tape recorders to instrumentalists enamored of driving fiddle and banjo tunes or the hypercharged string-band music of Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and Flatt and Scruggs that became known as bluegrass.
